Recognizing and treating common eye injuries
Eye injuries are extremely common and can occur from workplace accidents, motor vehicle collisions and other forms of trauma. In the event that you or a loved one sustains an eye injury, Dr Joshua Hann and the team at Eastside Eye Specialist Care are here to help. We encourage you to contact us as soon as possible so we can schedule a prompt evaluation. We will recommend appropriate treatment depending on the nature and severity of the injury.
Black Eye
A black eye, which describes bruising and swelling around the eye area, is often the result of a direct blow to the eye. Many people see us for black eyes following sports incidents, fights or car accidents. If you suffer a black eye, apply a cold compress to your eye as soon as you can and call our office. Black eyes vary in severity, and most should be checked out by a doctor.
Scratched Eye (Corneal Abrasion)
The clear surface of the eye (the cornea) can get scratched by accident during a sports game or practice or other type of outdoor activity. Sometimes inserting a contact lens improperly or grazing the eye with a fingernail can scratch the cornea. Depending on how deep the scratch is, it may cause symptoms such as eye watering, sensitivity to light, pain and vision problems. With scratches, it is better to be safe than sorry, so we recommend getting evaluated promptly.
Foreign Object to the Eye
Foreign objects can range from innocuous things like dirt or debris to more damaging items such as glass or metal. If you get something harmful lodged in your eye, do not try to remove it yourself. Call our office as soon as possible, or go to the emergency room for immediate attention.
Exposure to Chemicals
Exposing the eyes to chemicals, such as those found in common household products or the workplace, can be very harmful. The worst chemical burns can lead to vision loss. Immediate medical attention is recommended following the exposure. If you can’t get in touch with our office, go straight to the emergency room.
